In our daily lives, we are exposed to countless environmental toxins, pollutants, and even naturally occurring substances, such as heavy metals, that can harm our bodies over time. Fortunately, our bodies have a system in place to deal with these harmful agents – detoxification. Detoxification is a vital process that occurs at the cellular level, and it is commonly divided into two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification.

Phase 1 Detoxification: This phase includes Cytochrome P450 enzymes which are responsible for turning various toxins into less harmful substances. These enzymes help make the toxins more water-soluble and easier to eliminate. The unfortunate part is that some of these intermediate products can be highly reactive and more toxic than the original substances. This is where Phase 2 comes in!

Phase 2 Detoxification: In Phase 2, these intermediaries are neutralized and eliminated from the body. We eliminate toxins through our bowel movements, urine, and sweat. We want to make sure we are having a bowel movement every day. Many people have issues with constipation so getting the bowels moving is an important first step to detox.

For optimal health, it is important to have a balance between phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification. That is why I absolutely love functional medicine detoxes! I do one quarterly to help lower my toxic load. Depending on what has been going on in my life, the length of the detox will range from 7 to 21 days. Both phases of detox require different nutrients to work properly. A functional medicine detox provides the body with all of the nutrients needed so you have no doubt the wonders it is doing for you!

Other various lifestyle factors influence the detoxification process on a daily basis. Adequate nutrition, regular exercise, and proper hydration are fundamental in supporting both phases. Additionally, certain foods and supplements, such as cruciferous vegetables and antioxidants, can enhance the activities of detoxification enzymes.
